February 2nd in Lansing

This training will de-mystify bill creation and the legislative process. Prepare for an intense and extremely hands on exploration of how Michigan laws are created. Be a part of a group that drafts the content of a new Community Economic Development (CED) bill. A history of CED policy will also be presented.

February 15-17 and April 26-28 in Lansing

Commercial development in downtowns and neighborhood shopping districts will be explored with skilled trainers. Topics include project financing, understanding market factors, business attraction and retention, Main Streets principles, addressing concerns about gentrification, commercial pro forma development, and property management.

The cost is $250 for CEDAM members ($500 for members). Become a CEDAM member here. To enroll, you must have taken the CCDI Intro to Real Estate Development or submit a resume/statement of qualification to tiffany@cedam.info (a reminder to do this is included on the online registration form).

Managing Single Family Rehabilitation
December 7th in Lansing

This session will focus on maximizing the impact of owner-occupied rehabilitation programs, capitalizing on the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funds, and incorporating green principles. Green Development and Weatherization
December 8th at WARM’s Green Jobs Training Site

The future of development and jobs creation in Michigan is green. Learn about the financial implications of building and rehabbing green, the sources to fund it, and the savings green building brings to homeowners and the community at large. This session will be led by Jacob Corvidae and Stephen Christensen from WARM Training Center, and Ernie Zachary and Diane Jones from Zachary and Associates. CEDAM’s Foreclosure Intervention Tactics
October 20th in Lansing

This session is a must-attend for anyone with a foreclosure program or interested in starting foreclosure counseling at their agency. The session is on October 20th, there is no prerequisite to enroll, and the cost is $35 for CEDAM or Michigan Foreclosure Task Force members ($70 for non-members).

This day-long intensive session on Foreclosure Intervention focuses on community-based collaborative responses to the foreclosure crisis and what it takes to launch, support and sustain this type of effort. Participants will gain a better understanding of the role that perspective plays in building a successful coalition. You will learn about what agencies should take into consideration before adopting this approach as well as key success factors and a basic roadmap for moving from concept to reality. Participants will also learn about innovative approaches to foreclosure prevention/intervention, neighborhood stabilization and reuse of foreclosed properties from those who are leading these efforts in their respective areas of the state. CEDAM’s Innovation in Asset Building Strategies
October 21st in Lansing

This session is a must attend for anyone currently engaged in Financial Counseling, IDA’s, Financial Literacy or an agency that is interested in beginning any of these programs. The session is on October 21st, there is no prerequisite to enroll, and the cost is $35 for CEDAM or Asset Building Policy Project members ($70 for non-members).

Re-Thinking Asset Building Strategies will provide a unique framework for re-thinking and improving current asset building programs by reframing misconceptions about the people our programs serve (using the tools of The Lies that Bind: The Legacy of the Locks program presented by Anneshia Freeman from Grand Rapids). Participants can expect a frank discussion/workshop designed to foster greater understanding of individuals’ saving decisions.  The session will also provide feedback for current asset building programs and share best practices from across Michigan. For the agenda for this training, please click here (PDF).

CEDAM Launches Comprehensive Community Development Institute

CEDAM is pleased to announce the launch of our new training program, beginning in September of 2010. The Comprehensive Community Development Institute (CCDI) is based on CEDAM’s popular Real Estate Development Training (REDT) but features a different module for each experience level. With beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses, CCDI is the complete training program for Michigan’s community development professionals.

Core Concepts: Beginner
CCDI’s beginner course is an Introduction to Real Estate Development and offers a step-by-step look at the real estate development process with direct feedback from lenders, investors, and key partners.  This six-day course is recommended for professionals that are new to the industry or who are first-time developers.

Bricks and Mortar: Intermediate
The intermediate module is made up of three different courses that specifically cover Single-Family, Multi-Family, or Commercial real estate development. This module is recommended for professionals with a project concept in the pre-development stage, as a refresher course for seasoned developers, and/or for beginners who have completed the Core Concepts module of CCDI.

Rigorous Topic Immersion: Advanced
The advanced sessions of CCDI are single day sessions that are intended to address industry concerns and will be intense, thought provoking, and uniquely challenging. These sessions are recommended for organization leaders. Topics include: Green Development and Weatherization, Drafting and Moving Bills in the Michigan Legislature, Succession Planning and Building Indigenous Leadership, Auditing Your PR and Marketing Plan and more!
